Black on Broadway Wows 'Em at Landmark
Thanks to the enthusiastic audience who joined Skylark on April 19 to celebrate the brilliance of Black artistry in American Broadway through the vocal virtuosity of Sumaya Roble and Darius Gillard, accompanied by James Barnett on the piano. This free concert celebrated the cultural impact of Black composers and creators, from the ragtime energy of Eubie Blake’s Shuffle Along to the powerful Tropics After Dark by Margaret Bonds and Langston Hughes, the dramatic influence of Lorraine Hansberry in Raisin (based on her play A Raisin in the Sun), and the contemporary voice of Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop.
Spring Season of Skylark for Seniors is Underway
"Not every day do you get to say that you attended an opera performance---especially in your own home! The music performed was nothing short of amazing..."
---Reaction to a recent Skylark for Seniors program
April saw the launch of Skylark for Seniors' spring season, bringing the vitality of live opera and music theater to senior residences throughout the Twin Cities. These amazing, uplifting performances continue in May, with a Fall season in the works. Sharing live music in these intimate places creates joy and community for residents and staff alike. Special thanks to the singers who shared their incredible vocal talents: Corissa Bussian, Christina Christensen, Thore Dosdall, Jennifer Eckes, Josh Eidem, Julia Engel, Anthony Potts, and Justin Spenner. Thanks also to the gifted pianists who accompanied them: Lara Bolton and Jordan Buccholtz. Our thanks would not be complete without recognizing the generous sponsors who made the spring series possible: Anna M. Heilmaier Foundation, the Harlan Boss Foundation for the Arts, the Archie D. and Bertha H. Walker Foundation, and the Hubbard Broadcasting Foundation.
